In an increasingly polarised world, where social, political and cultural divisions seem to be deepening at the mercy of algorithms and new modes of communication brought about by digital transformation, initiatives such as La Revoluci\u00f3n de las Emociones (The Revolution of Emotions)<\/a>, illustrate how collaborative artistic practices can serve as a powerful resource for promoting social cohesion and active community participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of Europe is, in essence, a process of union and collaboration. As European nations face common challenges such as migration, climate change and inequality, collaborative artistic practices can become an important driver for creating a sense of European identity. By involving citizens from different backgrounds and cultures in artistic projects, mutual understanding and respect for diversity are fostered, these initiatives can help break down stereotypes and prejudices, promoting a more inclusive narrative of what it means to be European.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The growing inequality and inequity in our societies today push those hardest hit to find in migrants a scapegoat for their problems. The flames of hatred and radicalisation toward clearly xenophobic positions are easily ignited. In contexts where economic and social opportunities are increasingly unevenly distributed, the most vulnerable groups tend to feel frustration and despair. This situation is exacerbated when they face economic crises, cuts in public services or lack of employment, leading them to seek someone to blame for their difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of recognising the complex structural causes of inequality, some sectors of the population direct their anger toward those they perceive as \u201cothers.\u201d This dynamic is fuelled by stereotypes and prejudices, where migrants are seen as competitors for limited resources, rather than as individuals who also face significant challenges. Radicalisation toward xenophobic positions arises quickly in this context. Hate speech spreads easily, especially on digital platforms, where narratives that dehumanise migrants and perpetuate the idea that they are responsible for social and economic problems are disseminated. This not only affects migrants, but also erodes social cohesion and the fabric of communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tackling this phenomenon requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of inequality and promotes empathy, education and intercultural understanding. Fostering constructive dialogue and providing accurate information about migration can help dismantle myths and reduce hostility toward migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative artistic practices not only bring people together, but also generate a sense of identity linked to the territory, contributing to the construction of more inclusive societies. Community art projects promote collective management and the pursuit of the common good, as well as fostering the creation of spaces for dialogue and understanding, which in itself is a valuable tool for helping to mitigate polarisation. These initiatives often involve artists and community members in a joint creative process, where every voice is valued and every story has its place. This approach not only enriches the artistic outcome, but also empowers participants, allowing them to express their experiences and perspectives, thus creating a sense of belonging and connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people get involved in projects that reflect their stories and their environment, community ties are strengthened. These types of practices encourage residents to feel more connected to their neighbourhood and to each other. This connection is essential for building a cohesive community, where differences are celebrated rather than seen as divisions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, social participation through art fosters a sense of agency among individuals. When people actively participate in collaborative creation, they feel more empowered to influence their environment and community. And this empowerment is crucial to combating polarisation, as it promotes constructive dialogue and collaboration between different groups. Rather than focusing on differences, collaborative artistic practices invite people to find common ground and work together toward a shared goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 50 Percent <\/a>has launched its second in-person hub in Nairobi, Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We kicked off with an inspiring workshop bringing together local changemakers to focus on youth leadership, civic engagement, and systems change in Kenya. We chose to establish the Hub in Nairobi because it is both the heart of Kenya\u2019s civic life and a frontline where youth voices are rising against governance failures, inequality, and climate vulnerability. Out of recent youth-led protests and the systemic exclusion they have revealed, the Hub emerges as a space not just for resistance but for re-imagining\u2014where young people can move from protest to proposal, co-creating solutions alongside intergenerational allies as part of the global \u201c50 Percent<\/a>\u201d movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As activist Nangila Wafula cautioned, \u201cThe system is so deep-rooted, it feels like it\u2019s coded into our DNA. Even our protests are sometimes manufactured by the same system we oppose.\u201d The Hub seeks to confront exactly this challenge by channelling youth energy into long-term proposals and systemic alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matias Lara, Co-Director at The 50 Percent, opened the workshop by challenging the common phrase \u201cyouth are the future,\u201d calling it performative and often disconnected from meaningful decision-making. He reframed it powerfully, saying, \u201cYoung people are taking control of the future,\u201d a provocation to act, organise, and lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the workshop, participants reflected on the current youth moment in Kenya and shared their perspectives on the challenges facing young people. Wilson from UrbanBetter<\/a> highlighted the economic strain, governance issues, and climate inaction that affect both older and younger generations, while also recognising youth efforts to bridge these gaps through political advocacy and grassroots mobilisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another young changemaker, Odaya Kevin, spoke about the persistent marginalisation of youth and the rise of digital activism, noting that the education system fails to cultivate civic leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing examples from personal experience, Abigail Wakirima offered insights from climate advocacy, raising concerns about tokenism and extractive partnerships that favour older authorities\u2019 personal gain rather than supporting youth-led initiatives. Despite these challenges, she acknowledged opportunities for meaningful engagement through mechanisms like Kenya's Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matias encouraged participants to move from analysis to action, asking, \u201cWhat are you doing today to make a difference?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session also introduced The 50 Percent\u2019s philosophy, which combines virtuous citizenship, systems transformation, community building and planetary well-being. Participants explored cardinal virtues as practical tools to navigate complex challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
